If Russia were to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine, or by some contrivance caused a nuclear incident, Russia’s own troops and perhaps even Moscow itself, could become the target of an equivalent response.
There is no existential danger to Russia, and therefore no need for nuclear weapons, unless Ukrainian troops defeated all of the Russian invaders, the entire Russian military, and marched in force against Moscow in order to sack and pillage the town.
For Russia to bring nuclear weapons into play needlessly will only demonstrate Putin’s total breakdown of reason and restraint. Such a vile act must be answered preemptively with the swiftest and most severest possible response in order to prevent even deadlier and more destructive escalation from Putin.
