Color me surprised and impressed!
The following is my assessment of the “12-Day War” between Israel and Iran:
Iran and the USA (as peace-maker) come out way ahead of Israel in this.
Israel is the big loser: The war on Gaza and surrounding states degraded Israel's economy severely. Iran has destroyed a lot of infrastructure in Israel, which worsens Israel’s situation for a long time. It will be months, if not years, before things are back to normal in Tel Aviv and Haifa (not to mention many other areas that were struck). It does not end there for Israel, though.
For all of this, Netanyahu accomplished nothing except stay in power for a while longer. It is entirely possible that he will be deposed by some means and perhaps even tried for war crimes. He’s the one responsible for this mess.
Iran knows that Netanyahu/Israel will not believe that their intentions were not to have nuclear weapons. Sure, they enriched Uranium to 60%, but likely as a hedge after being accused of wanting nukes by a vociferously belligerent leader like Netanyahu for forty years and counting. The fact is that Iran did not have have and did not want nuclear weapons. Netanyahu finally got his wish, however, striking Iran in hopes of regime change.
Wait, what?! Regime change?
That’s right, Netanyahu sought to decapitate the Iranian leadership: In the first strike, several high-ranking Iranian leaders were killed but the Iranian people did not magically rise up and overthrow their leaders (just who the fuck imagines endlessly that shit like this will actually work?!)
Oh, but wait, wasn’t this supposed to be about Iran’s nuclear weapons program?!
Hmm, this is starting to reek of a movie plot that I’ve been seeing again and again … and again. It smells like the kind of movie that the MI6 likes to write. Hmmm…
/me strokes his chin while reminiscing about all the other regime-change plots of the past 80+ years.
Anyway, where were we? Oh right!
Iran will likely build a nuclear weapon now as deterrence against a recurrence of Israel's aggression. This is a serious loss for Israel and a monumental win for Iran: Iran did not actually have a nuclear weapons program, nor did they want nuclear weapons (it’s a big expense and a big responsibility), but now that the IAEA was revealed to be agents of the west and Iran kicked them out, Iran has all the freedom it could want to develop nukes for real and in secret (like Israel did). In other words, the MI6 and Netanyahu overplayed their hand and fucked up big-time!
After all of Netanyahu's four decades-long screeching, he has effectively summoned his worst nightmare: This conflict moved Iran from not wanting nukes to having to have nukes in order to ensure its own security against the forces set against it for the last ~80 years, at least.
This is a bad, really BAD day for Netanyhu! It’s also a serious setback for the British, whose signature script turned into a monumental clusterfuck. Yeah, fuck you MI6, fuck you! Let’s see how you salvage some imperial control from this god-damned fuckup, you fucking rainbow coloured twat bog gobblers!
The USA, on the other hand, looks like the big winner because President Trump “played” Iran (it was just show business) to bring peace, while looking strong and decisive in the process without making any true concessions or doing any real damage to Iran:
Pictures of the strikes on two sites (Natanz and Fordow) showed nowhere near the damage that Russia inflicts on a daily basis on Ukrainian fortifications. There’s absolutely no way that Fordow was destroyed, for example. Some surface features were damaged and a few buildings taken down. The damage is hardly worth mentioning. It was all for show-and-blow to give Iran a chance to back down.
In fact, Iran negotiated with Quatar ahead of the retaliatory strike against the US Al Udeid airbase. Perhaps one missile struck, but the damage is equally pathetic compared to what the US did to Iran.
Both sides issued bombastic statements of success. Both sides saved face, but Israel?
With the supposed destruction of Iran’s nuclear facilities, Netanyahu has no legitimate reason to continue attacks and every excuse to stop them. So far, so good.
The bad news for Israel (and the USA) is that there are (unconfirmed!!) video reports that Iran shot down at least one (but possibly several) Israeli F35 fighter jets. If true, that would mean that Iran has the ability to take out the most modern and advanced fighter jet that the USA has to offer. That’s ++Ungood. Not wanting to lose such jets is the reason that US forces withdrew from Yemen and effectively conceded the field to the Houthis, so these reports have a certain smell of legitimacy.
If Iran really downed an F35 (or several!!), then that's really bad news for the USA (and Israel). A nation which can take down what is billed as the world’s most advanced fighter jet is not a nation to be trifled with. For certain, this sort of loss is not something to which Israel or the United States would want to admit, as it would reveal a major vulnerability for the losing side, and an big feather in Iran's cap.
None of these reports will be acknowledged by either side, meaning that Iran will not admit this, either: Thus play the diplomats.
Bottom line, Iran proved itself way(!) more powerful and capable than Netanyahu anticipated. President Trump and his team managed to bury the evidence of Israel’s failures as much as possible while throwing Netanyahu a lifeline, and giving Iran a face-saving option to stop further attacks that did not make Israel and the US look like the losers. Kudos to Trump!!
Kudos to Iran as well, for playing their cards with aplomb! The diplomatic tango behind the scenes would have been ABSOLUTELY FASCINATING to witness!!!
Ultimately, Iran agreed to the dance because it gave them a big win, even if the win had to be kept quiet. Internally, Iran will play this as Israel having given up the fight. After all, Israel started this war and now it's coming to a ceasefire. It’s no big stretch to treat this as Israel’s capitulation.
What about the future?
I think this play will result in a seismic shift of power in the middle east: No longer can Israel throw its weight around like it did for the past 75 years. If Israel doesn’t change its ways, then Iran may well throw its weight in behind Israel’s chosen enemies and end Israel once and for all. Even Netanyahu (if he doesn’t end his life in prison) may not be so stupid, desperate, or vicious to invite that blow.
The US played a VERY SMART DIPLOMATIC CARD with Iran, which will likely not be forgotten by Iran’s leadership: President Trump has a serious opportunity to help rewrite the script for the Middle East. If future administrations don’t fuck it up, this could result in significant advantages for the United States in the region and finally usher in actual peace.
Just imagine it!!!
And finally, Pakistan's nomination for President Trump to receive the Nobel Peace Prize is not nearly so strange as it seemed just a few days ago. It is, in fact, very much deserved for this single action alone!
Yes, color me impressed!
